The world now has a whole generation that has grown up with the Internet. It’s a technical phenomenon that’s become as commonplace in all of our lives as electricity supplies, mobile telephones and air travel. There’s no mystique or glamour any longer; we expect to be able to access the internet wherever we are, just as we expect our mobile phones to locate a signal and connect us with the rest of the world whenever and wherever we switch them on. In fact, we can feel quite lost and disorientated when they do not.
We chose ‘frames’ because they remain the smallest indivisible unit of moving images. Just like it is the words of a book that are its contents, it is the frames that are the basic units of media production. This white paper describes a concept which will allow us to break down the barriers to global media production; to access, process and deliver content from anywhere to anywhere using only the internet. We call this the ‘Internet of Frames’.
