IP is now recognised as a viable content distribution platform for the broadcast industry, thanks to its ubiquity and maturity as a technology standard. IP represents a flexible and inexpensive solution to the changing demands and habits of consumers globally, but it also brings with it a requirement for broadcast service providers to re-engineer their systems and processes. Naturally, there is some resistance to this change, given the years of investment in existing systems, the upheaval in transitioning to a new platform, and re-architecting the many hundreds of supporting functions required to get content from studio to screen.
